The Tuk-Tuk Theatre is a mobile theatrical structure with a striking visual impact that draws on historical elements associated with street theatre and iconic urban vehicles. Aesthetically, it is inspired by traditional toys; by the decorative – and utilitarian – universe of beautiful coloured biscuit and chocolate tins; by the contraptions and automatons found in St John’s waterfalls and mechanised nativity scenes.
The show ‘O vaqueiro que não mentia’ is a very old Portuguese folk story. Researcher Teófilo Braga collected a version on the island of Madeira and in the Algarve, under the name ‘Boi Cardil’. In Coimbra, it is recorded as ‘Boi Rabil’ by Adolfo Coelho. Many of these versions are in verse. In Brazil, we find examples such as ‘Querino, o vaqueiro do rei’, ‘O boi Leição’ or ‘O Boi Leitão’, which appear in various literary collections. From Spain comes ‘El toro Barroso’, collected and recorded by Professor Espinosa.
Lafontana – Formas Animadas is a theatre company from Vila de Conde dedicated to the creation and presentation of shows with animated forms (puppets, masks, shadow theatre, etc.), as well as training and research activities in this area.
The main differentiating factor and identity of Lafontana’s artistic project lies in the recognition and exploration of the traditional techniques of Animated Forms Theatre, the study and understanding of their essential nature and the search for ways to evolve them, in technical, aesthetic and dramaturgical terms.
